10 YEAR-OLD BRANDON SHAFER AND HIS TEACHER PATSY DONAHUE GO BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER
SUCCESSFUL KIDNEY TRANSPLANT SURGERY
Brandon suffers from polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
(New Lenox, IL) May 12, 2006 - Less than two weeks after kidney transplant surgery, 10-year-old Brandon Shafer went back to school today. Students at Oster-Oakview Intermediate Middle School celebrated with a program on “Students Making a Difference.” Brandon, and his 4th grade teacher Patsy Donahue, who donated her kidney were special guests.
Brandon suffers from polycystic kidney disease (PKD.) While he and Ms. Donahue recover from their surgeries, Brandon’s classmates are learning about PKD, with textbooks and materials provided by the PKD Foundation.
The entire student body learned more about the life-threatening disease that ravaged Brandon’s kidneys at today’s assembly. They also learned how they can help other patients and families living with PKD.
The not-for-profit PKD Foundation is the only organization, worldwide, dedicated to finding a treatment and a cure for this devastating disease. For more information about PKD and the PKD Foundation, visit www.pkdcure.org or call 1-800-PKD-CURE.
Congressman Jerry Weller, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and other dignitaries helped welcome Brandon and Ms. Donahue.
