2008 Translational Research Grant Award
Goal
One of the PKD Foundation’s principal goals is the development of new clinical interventions for the treatment of PKD. Traditionally, the Foundation pursued this goal through the support of basic laboratory research aimed at increasing understanding of the genetic and pathological processes involved in PKD. While this remains an important strategy, recent advances and extraordinary scientific momentum have led the Foundation to conclude that it is time to expand its funding programs to include accelerating the “translation” of the most promising basic science findings towards clinical applications. Accordingly, the PKD Foundation has established the Translational Research Program.
Purpose
The purpose of the PKD Foundation’s Translational Research Program is to facilitate and provide support for translational research in polycystic kidney disease, which will lead to the development of innovative approaches to treatment. The Program fosters collaboration between basic and clinical scientists with the intent of enhancing and actively accelerating the transfer of basic research findings to therapeutic interventions. Suggested areas of research include the development of high through-put assays to screen candidate drugs, identification of biomarkers of disease progression, development of better animal models of both autosomal dominant and recessive polycystic kidney disease and pilot clinical trials to test promising drug therapies.
Scope
The Translational Research Program is intended to support projects that are larger in magnitude than those funded under the Foundation’s traditional grant and fellowship program and that are directed toward the development of techniques, tools and/or tests that facilitate the identification of treatments for PKD. The Award amount equals $100,000 total costs per year for two years, with the possibility of a third year of funding available depending on study progress and the need for additional time to complete the project.
