Longtime PKD Foundation Friend Medals in Transplant Games

Longtime PKD Foundation friend, supporter and former Board of Trustees Advisory Committee member, Tom Elias, particpated in his eighth Tranplant Games of America. Elias, who started partipating in the Games just nine months after his transplant in 1998, took silver in the 50-yard breaststroke and bronze in the long jump.

Elias was diagnosed with polycsytic kidney disease in 1989 and received a kidney transplant on Sept. 17, 1997 at age 53. About the Transplant Games, Tom observes that part of its appeal is being with people who have been through a similar experience. “Your own people understand things about you that the rest of the world cannot and never will – that’s the most important aspect of the Games for me. The bi-annual Games were held July 28-31, in Grand Rapids, MI.
