Elizabeth Bruening LewisElizabeth Bruening Lewis

Elizabeth Bruening Lewis, author and daughter of PKD Foundation co-founder Joseph Bruening, passed away on June 7. Lewis's father and Dr. Jared Grantham started the PKD Foundation in 1982, after she and her mother, Allene, were diagnosed with the disease. Elizabeth Lewis was diagnosed with PKD in 1975. She was on dialysis before having a successful kidney transplant in 1989.

Lewis was closely associated with the PKD Foundation for many years, helping raise awareness and funds for the disease. Her Arizona Murder Mysteries series features a character with PKD, and a percentage of the books' sales are donated to the Foundation.

During her career, Lewis received several accolades. She was an Arizona Press Woman and a member of the National Federation of Press Women since 1964. Lewis earned a B.A. from Vassar College, an M.A. from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in Medieval History from Georgetown University with a specialty in Symbolism in Christian Art.

Besides numerous articles, Lewis published six books (three fiction and three non-fiction). Four of her books won first place national awards.

She taught humanities at Arizona State University and was a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. She served on the Board of the Arizona Nature Conservancy, the Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board, the Arizona Center for the Book and as a Senior Docent at the Phoenix Art Museum. She loved hiking and walking in the mountains, canyons and deserts of her beloved Arizona.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Orme, and their two children, Joseph and Blaise, and three grandchildren. Her daughter, Elizabeth Blaise Hazelwood, currently serves on the PKD Foundation Board of Trustees.

Services will be held at the Franciscan Renewal Center, Paradise Valley, AZ where Elizabeth attended and lectured, on July 1 at 10:00 a.m.
