Somatostatin (Octreotide®, Lanreotide® is biochemically related drug) is a naturally occurring hormone in humans that binds to a receptor protein on the surface of renal cells  and blocks cAMP (an intracellular second messenger) formation inside the cell.  Fluid secretion and cell proliferation are both reduced resulting in decreased cyst and kidney size.
