Concepts Proposed to Change Current Policy and Highlights of Current Working Model

The Public Health Service (PHS) has initiated a new guideline to discard any transplanted organ at risk of blood borne infection, which could result in organs being discarded unnecessarily.

The American Society of Nephrology held its annual meeting November 8-13, 2011 in Philadelphia, PA. The PKD Foundation sponsored a post-graduate education course on Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease. 

The PKD Foundation supports the spending bill for Fiscal Year 2012 that provides the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with a funding increase to support its critical work. 

According to research presented at the American Society for Cell Biology Annual Meeting, the hormone relaxin improved kidney function and blood flow in lab rats genetically altered to model PKD. 

The PKD Foundation's Scientific Advisory Committee report there is currently no scientific evidence indicating Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy + Stem Cells Transplant from the Shijiazhuang Kidney Disease Hospital, China, are effective treatments for PKD.

Scientists at University of California, Santa Barbara, have discovered that ADPKD patients may benefit from a drug that is currently being used to treat arthritis.

Jared J. Grantham, MD, FACP, is this year's recipient of the John P. Peters Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to improving the lives of patients with kidney disease and to furthering the understanding of the kidney in health and disease. 

A team of researchers, led by Jason Bakeberg and Christopher Ward of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, studied how mutations in the PKHD1 gene lead to Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease (ARPKD), which affects 1 in 20,000 newborns.
