Clinical Trials Show Promise for PKD

Scientists are expanding their study of the investigational drug Tolvaptan, which could help PKD patients by stopping or reversing the growth of cysts.

Phase II human trials are almost complete, and enrollment for Phase III trials has begun. This round of human trials will include a larger group from 1,000 to 3,000 PKD patients living in North America, South America, Central America, Asia and Europe

For the 600,000 Americans suffering from PKD, fluid-filled cysts grow on the kidneys. Over time, these cysts get bigger and multiply, often leading to kidney failure. Dialysis and transplantation are the only options. Currently, there is no treatment and no cure.

Tolvaptan was first tested on humans to treat water retention from congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver and other diseases. Researchers want to know if Tolvaptan inhibits cyst growth by blocking hormone stimulation in PKD kidneys.

Patients and physicians interested in participating in these trials should contact Otsuka at (866) 712-5837. Information on Otsuka can be obtained from their website www.otsuka.com The PKD Foundation supported basic research leading to the human trial of this drug.
