Book About PKD Patient Hits Shelves
“My Favorite American,” a recently-released book, was written by Canadian author Dennis McCloskey and follows the long-term struggles of polycystic kidney disease patient, Valen Cover.
McCloskey’s book started as a routine article in his company’s spring newsletter and became a story in an inspirational-type Catholic magazine, Canadian Messenger. As McCloskey learned more about Cover, he soon realized that her story went deeper than what could fit into the magazine. He was touched, and felt compelled to write a book that told her story.
The book highlights Cover’s many life-threatening struggles including seizures, scoliosis, pancreatitis, and now, PKD. For many young adults, these ailments may have been too much to overcome. However, for Cover, the fight is nowhere near over. She continues to stay positive, living one day at a time while all the while being a ray of hope for all who know her.
McCloskey says that one of the primary goals of the book is to spread the message of PKD to the public.
“Hopefully, through Valen's courageous, valiant, and successful struggle with the disease, her story will inspire and uplift those who have PKD and those who love and care for them,” he said.
