WALK FAQ

If you're taking part in the TriState Walk for PKD, you may be interested in the following FAQs.

If you don’t see the answer to your question, please email us at TriStateWalk@pkdcure.org or call 877-PKD-WALK.

Who should register?

Every participant must register individually.  This includes all children who are walking, each team member, and volunteers.

Where can I tell my family & friends to register for the 2008 TriState Walk for PKD?

They can register online at www.TriStateWalk.org or by calling 877-PKD-WALK (877-763-9255). Or click here for a PDF, which can be printed out, completed and mailed to PKD Foundation, TriState Walk Registration, 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 400, Kansas City, MO 64114-3367 or faxed to 816-931-8655.

Do I have to pay a registration fee?

No.  There is no registration fee for the TriState Walk for PKD.

When registering, I signed up multiple family members & friends.  However, they have not received a confirmation email & cannot access their participant pages. What's wrong?

In order for each registrant to receive a registration confirmation & gain access to the participant center, a valid email address has to be entered for him/her. It is okay if it is the same email address as yours, as long as we have one for each record. This is the case for children as well.

How much money should I raise?

Raise as much as you can! The goal is for each walker to raise an average of $220, which equates to funding more than 50 research grants! The more you raise the bigger and better the prizes you can win.

Where do I send donations?
In order to have checks show up on your fundraising Web site, you need to mail donations, along with the Donation Submission Form (download here or find at the Download Center) to:

PKD Foundation
Attn: Walk for PKD
9221 Ward Parkway, Ste 400
Kansas City, MO 64114

Please write the name of the walker who you'd like to get credit for the donation in the memo line of each check. Please do not send cash.

Can I split donations?
If submitted by check, yes. When submitting checks, just let us know if the donations are to be split among walkers.  We can also transfer a donation if it is paid by check. Donations made by credit card cannot be split or transferred. Changes can not be made after the day of the Walk.

Are donations tax deductible and how do I get a receipt?

Yes.  All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by the law.  Your cancelled check or credit card transaction serves as a receipt.  In an effort to put even more of the money you raise toward research, the PKD Foundation will only mail receipts and thank you notes to donors who donate $50 or more. In addition to sending a personal thank you to all of your donors, please provide receipts to your cash donors who pledge $49.99 or less. Please download and print the official PKD Foundation Cash Receipt form (PDF) available online.

How long will donations for the Walk for PKD be accepted?

Continue to watch your thermometers rise and collect donations online through November 30. To be eligible for prizes, the deadline is November 18. Continue to solicit donations and get us closer to our finish line, a CURE for PKD!

Why can't I enter offline gifts this year like I did last year?

In an effort to efficiently and cost effectively track data, we can no longer offer the feature for walkers to individually enter offline gifts into their Web sites. Mailing in collected donations early and with the proper forms will ensure you'll receive credit for these donations quickly. Submit checks using the above procedure.

I prefer that the amount people donate does not show up on my fundraising honor roll.  How can I change this?

If you do not want gift amounts to show up on your scroll, please email WalkForPKD@pkdcure.org with your First & Last Name, Email Address, Walk Location, and Team Name. With this information we can go into our system and change your account to not show donation amounts.

Will my donor get a receipt from the PKD Foundation?

In an effort to put even more of the money you raise toward research, the PKD Foundation will only mail receipts and thank you notes to donors who donate $50 or more. In addition to sending a personal thank you to all of your donors, please provide receipts to your donors who pledge $49.99 or less. Please download and print the official PKD Foundation Cash Donation Form.

How long after I send in a check does it take to show up on my personal webpage?

Checks that are sent prior to the Walk can take 6-10 business days from time we receive the gift to see it appear on your page. To ensure your donations are properly credited, please make sure all donations are sent with the Donation Submission Form. If you want to avoid the wait, encourage your donors to donate online! Online donations are safe and easy!

If you have allowed time for us to receive & process the donation and it is still not showing up, please contact WalkForPKD@pkdcure.org with your First & Last Name, email address, where you are walking, as well as the donor's name, address & gift amount.  This will allow us to look into donation and make sure it gets properly credited.

How does Team Fundraising Work?

When a donor gives to an individual walker, that donation is eligible to show up in the scroll on a walker's individual page. Only the largest 20 donations scroll. This donation goes toward the individual walker's total & prize eligibility, the team total & prize eligibility and the event total. Although you cannot donate to a specific Team, by donating to a Walker you are supporting the Team the walker is on and the Event as a whole. Don’t forget that teams that raise $6,000 will receive a LCD TV. For more information, visit Walk Team Info.

There’s not a Walk for PKD in my area but I still want to participate. What can I do?

Participate through the Virtual Walk for PKD! You can register for the Virtual Walk for PKD online by searching for a walk near you, then clicking the Virtual Walk for PKD option. You’ll have access to all the online fundraising tools and you can form teams, just as you would if you were participating in any other Walk for PKD around the country.

Some Virtual walkers last year took a symbolic walk around their local park, took pictures of their walk and sent them to us. One woman even walked across an inactive volcano in Hawaii! We encourage you to do something like this, too.

How can my company get involved with the Walk for PKD?
There are many ways for your company to get involved! Gather your co-workers and create a company team. Not only will your company promote teamwork among employees, you can promote your business by wearing team t-shirts at the Walk and show your company cares about the community. Also, talk to your HR department about promoting volunteer opportunities within your company. The PKD Foundation is a volunteer-driven organization and we're always looking for help!

What will I get on the day of the Walk?

If you turn in $100 on or before the Walk, you will receive an official TriState Walk for PKD T-shirt. If you raise $300 on or before the Walk, you will receive an official PKD soft-sided cooler (this item is not available after the Walk.)

How do I obtain my prize?

You can check these prizes out today at www.TriStateWalk.org. Prizes cannot be combined and participants can earn one prize at their fundraising level.  To be eligible for these fantastic prizes, you have until November 18 to send in all of your donations. Prizes are not cumulative.

What do I need to bring with me to the TriState Walk for PKD? You must completely fill out and BRING your Walker envelope which will be mailed to you a few weeks prior to the Walk, your Walker Donation Tracking Form and enclose the donations you have raised.  Please do not bring cash.

What if I lose my Check-In Envelope?

If you lose your Check-In Envelope you will be directed to the area called Do Not Have Envelope to complete a new envelope. These lines are longer so we recommend you put your Check-In Envelope in a safe place!

What if it rains?

The TriState Walk for PKD takes place RAIN or SHINE.  Hope for shine!!!

Can my child (12 or under) participate in the walk? Do they need to raise money?

The TriState Walk for PKD is a family event for all ages! We recognize that young children may not have the ability to raise funds like adults do.  However, please keep in mind that with a little help from an adult, children have the potential to be big fundraisers! They can also participate in the Penny Kid’s Dash. Remember: All kids (no matter the age) must register!

I sent out emails from my Participant Center asking for donations, but my friends & family are saying they never received anything.  I checked "My Progress" and it shows they were sent.  What happened?

The software provider we use to support our Walk and the email system experienced some email deliverability issues which affected our ability to send emails out of many of the Participant Centers.  This issue was not isolated to just us, as all of their fundraising clients worldwide experienced the same email deliverability problem.  As of August 27, 2008, the software provider reports that the problem is now fixed.  If you have tried to send emails out of your Participant Center in the 3-4 days preceding the fix date, you should check with your recipients to see if they received them, and if not, re-send your emails.

We will continue to monitor the email situation on our end, but if you experience email problems again, please let us know.  We apologize for the inconvenience.  Please also know that our IT department has been diligently building our own Walk technology solution for a number of months now, and by next year’s Walk, we will have our own, custom-built solution, which will help us avoid these types of issues in the future.

A family member donated money to my walk.  Why doesn't it show up on my personal page?

It has come to our attention that mail sent through the US Postal Service is traveling quite slowly, sometimes taking 2-3 weeks to get to our office. Due to the high volume of mail we receive this time of year, it can take a number of business days from the time we receive the gift to the time you see it appear on your personal page.

To ensure your donations are properly credited, please make sure all donations are sent with the Donation Submission Form, which you can get by visiting the Download Center

Please also remember that while all donations made on your behalf will show up on your goal, only the top 20 gifts will show up on your fundraising honor roll.

You are still eligible for PKD Prizes and will receive a Walk for PKD t-shirt in the mail if you raise $100!

Some Virtual walkers last year took a symbolic walk around their local park, took pictures of their walk and sent them to us.  We encourage you to do something like this, too. One woman even walked across an inactive volcano in Hawaii!

In years past, some Virtual walkers have used the Virtual Walk for PKD as a stepping stone to start a Walk for PKD in their area. Virtual walkers recruited a team of people in their town and started the buzz about a Walk for PKD. If you’re truly interested in becoming a Walk for PKD Coordinator in 2008, email walkforpkd@pkdcure.org to find out more information.

If you have any further questions, or if there is anything we can do for you, please let us know. Email us at walkforpkd@pkdcure.org. Thanks so much for your interest in the Walk for PKD!

Why do I have to pay a registration fee?

The registration fee covers the cost of participating - T-shirt and other materials - and is not tax deductible. Yes. Please fill out the Mail-In Registration form (Get this form by visiting the Download Center) and mail it to the PKD Foundation with your registration payment
