Scientific Advisory Committee

Made up of 12 of the most prestigious physicians and scientists in the United States, the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) oversees PKD Foundation research and medical programs aimed at discovering and delivering treatments for PKD. The SAC meets several times throughout the year to discuss relevant medical issues, provide guidance to PKD Foundation staff and review and approve research applications for grants and fellowships in the field of PKD science. All PKD Foundation materials and publications are approved by SAC members, who possess the highest level of experience and knowledge in PKD clinical and scientific work.

Benjamin D. Cowley, Jr., MD, began leading the PKD Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee in 2010 after serving as vice-chair in 2008 and 2009 and as a frequent member of the grant/fellowship review committee.


Dr. Cowley has been involved in PKD research for more than 20 years, publishing numerous articles and presenting on PKD at various conferences and events. He also trained under Dr. Jared Grantham, co-founder of the PKD Foundation and distinguished doctor at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
 

Dr. Cowley attended undergraduate school at Rice University and received his MD degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed post-graduate education in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, and Biochemistry at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He subsequently trained at the National Institutes of Health from 1987 to 1989 and then joined the faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In 2002, he moved to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where he is Chief of Nephrology & Hypertension and John Gammill Professor in Polycystic Kidney Disease. Dr. Cowley has been named one of Oklahoma’s “Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
